Last day before my leaving for Asia for 2.5 months / アジアへ二ヶ月半行く前の最後の日

I am leaving Northern Ireland for Japan and Taiwan for next 2.5 months for 3 exhibition tomorrow.
All day today I have worked for fixing the caravan before my leaving.

明日日本と台湾の三つの展覧会のために二ヶ月半、北アイルランドを離れる。
発つ前に今日は一日キャンピングカーのを修理した。

I bought these parts for the door of the refrigerator. But I can not find anywhere I can attach it.

Never ending problem / 終わらない問題

Since I replaced a punctured tyre to a spare tyre,
I have got a new problem that the brake was stuck.
If I tow a caravan, I can hear the terrible noise of the brake.
I could also smell something burning.

Though the tyre store where I was thinking to go was not so far from B&Q,
I have kept stopping to check the caravan several times before arriving there.

After buying 1 pairs of tyre there, the mechanic helped me to hit the brake with a hammer and put grease on it, they could figure out the problem.

And after camping on the public road yesterday I moved to the camping park.
Just before arriving there the disgusting noise of the brake has started again!

Fortunately beside the camping park I found the garage for the car.
I asked the mechanic for help 
I must have changed the schedule because of that.

Because of hard rain today I have also found another problem that water is leaking a little bit.

パンクしたをスペアタイヤに交換してから、
ブレーキがかかったままになってしまう新たな問題が発生した。
キャンピングカーをけん引すると、ひどいブレーキ音が鳴り響き、
何かがやける臭いがした。

タイヤ専門店はホームセンターから遠くはない距離であったが、何度も車を止めてチェックしながら何とかたどり着いた。

スペアのタイヤを購入したあと、そこのメカニックがブレーキをハンマーでたたいて、
グリースを塗ってくれたおかげで、なんとか問題は解決した。

そして昨日道路でキャンプした後、キャンピングパークに移動したのだが、
たどり着く直前に、またあの忌まわしいブレーキ音がはじまったのである！

幸いキャンピングパークの横に車修理屋があったので、そこの修理工に助けを求めた。
当然ながら、予定を変更することを余儀なくされた。

本日の激しい雨のせいで、少し雨漏りがする問題にも気がついた。

Because of hard rain today I have also found another problem that water is leaking a little bit. The wall paper around leaking parts has also started peeling.

もしどなたか、今日キャンピングカーを見に来る予定だったらすみません。ちょっとキャンピングカーにいろいろ問題が発生して、国境のキャンピングパークに今日一日留まることにしました。もし来られるならもちろん歓迎です。

Territory / テリトリー

As Northern Ireland has conflict which also relate to each territory, everybody has own territory.

It is not so easy for me to find the place where I can park my caravan as most of places belong to somebody.

Even when I tried to park my caravan on the road in front of my house,
I have got a small conflict with neighbors.

So I have started finding the proper place for camping for the project by researching some of public roads where have border points between Donegal, Republic of Ireland and Derry/Londonderry, Northern Ireland, carefully.

北アイルランドにテリトリーの関係がある紛争問題があるように、
全ての人がそれぞれのテリトリーを持っている。

キャンピングカーを駐車がする場所を探そうとすると容易ではない。
なぜならほとんどの場所が誰かの所有する場所だからである。
自分の家の前の通りにキャンピングカーを駐車しようとしたときでさえ、
近隣の人たちとささいなトラブルがあった。

そうして、プロジェクトのためにキャンピングカーを駐車するのに適した場所を探すべく、ドネゴール(アイルランド)とデリー(北アイルランド、英国)の国境がある通りを慎重にリサーチし出したのである。

In trouble again ! / トラブル再び！

When I arrived in Derry/Londonderry around 17:30, it started raining.
So I decided to stay in the camping park near the border instead of the boarder in the public road.
But before arriving there one of tyre of caravan punctured suddenly!!
So I pull over my caravan and car in the big parking of B&Q (Big DIY store).
After calming down I noticed I must hurry to buy the tyre to replace somewhere nearby.
I found Halford (Car accessory store) in the internet. After hook off the caravan in the parking, I drove there only with my car. But unfortunately they only sell 4 sets of tyres and it was already after 18:00. I have no chance to buy the new tire any where today.
So I decided to camp in this big parking of B&Q.
As I have needed to jack up my caravan to replace the tyre, I started jack up the caravan and take the punctured tyre.
Though I didn't have the proper tools to take the caravan tyre, fortunately I was able to buy them in B&Q.

After taking a tyre I found a spare tyre just bottom of the caravan fortunately.
It was not so easy for me to replace it as I especially didn't know how to take the spare tyre from the caravan. When I finish replacing it, It was already around 22:30.
The spare tyre has so many cracks on the surface. It seems really old and it doesn't last so long.
Even though I replaced to the spare tyre today, I decided to buy a new tire tomorrow.
I started running a new generator which I bought again in Belfast.
It took 1 more hour to start a brand new generator.
This time I chained the generator to my car for secure to prevent from the thief.
When I finished preparing for camping in the parking already after 0:30.
Because my caravan is 20 years old, I keep finding the problem with it.


夕方5時半頃、デリーに到着すると、雨が降り始めた。
今晩は、国境のある道路でなく国境近くのキャンピングパークに泊まることにした。
ところがたどり着く前に、あろうことかキャンピングカーのタイヤの１つが突然パンクしてしまったのである。
すぐに、キャンピングカーと車を近くにあったホームセンターの大きな駐車場に駐車した。
落ち着くと、すぐに交換するタイヤを探して買わないとならないことに気づいた。カー用品店のHalfordをネットで見つけたので、キャンピングカーを外し、車で向かったが、そこでは4セットのタイヤしか売らないのである。気がつけば6時過ぎ、新しいタイヤをどこかで購入することは今日はもう不可能だった。
遅かれ早かれタイヤを交換しなければならないので、キャンピングカーをジャッキで持ち上げ、パンクしたタイヤをはずしはじめた。
適した道具を持ってなかったのだが、幸いにも目の前はホームセンターなのですぐに買うことができた。
タイヤを外すと、幸運にもキャンピングカーの車体の裏にスペアタイヤを発見した。
しかしながら、どうやってそのスペアタイヤを外すのかがわからなく、タイヤを交換し終わった時には既に夜10時半を回っていた。
スペアタイヤは古く表面にはひび割れだらけなので、長くは持たないと思った、スペアタイヤに交換はしたけど明日、やはり新しいタイヤを買うことに決めた。
ベルファストで再度購入した新品の発電機を始動しようと試みたが、なかなかエンジンがスタートせず、さらに一時間を費やした。
今回は発電機を盗まれないように、チェーンで車に固定した。
駐車場でのキャンプの準備を終えた時には既に深夜12時半。
20年の年期の入ったキャンピングカーなのでいたるところで問題が見つかる。

I started jack up the caravan and take the punctured tyre.
キャンピングカーをジャッキで持ち上げ、パンクしたタイヤをはずしはじめた。

It was not so easy for me to replace it as I especially didn't know how to take the spare tyre from the caravan.
特にどうやってそのスペアタイヤを外すのかがわからなく、タイヤの交換は困難を極めた。

It took 1 more hour to start a brand new generator.
新品の発電機を始動しようと試みたが、なかなかエンジンがスタートせず、さらに一時間を費やした。

When I woke up, it was already around 11am.
I guess I have been exhausted because I could not sleep properly the day before yesterday.
Though I was thinking to return to the same border point to have a camping before heading towards to Belfast, I noticed the caravan storage will close at 6 pm.
So I changed a plan to take Caravan to the office of the City of Culture to show it to the officer there before leaving Derry/Londonderry.
After eating breakfast I have driven to the City of Culture.
When I arrived there, I explained to the securities of the City of Culture I am an artist who got the commission from city of culture and then came to show my caravan to show the officer of city of culture.
But securities don't believe me and they didn't allow me to enter.
And they started talking about bomb alert.

After I showed my caravan to the program officer,
She was nice and she was impressed about my caravan like I had expected.

After leaving there I have started thinking how I look like.
I have towed a caravan like a hippy people.
And I have also been growing my own hair without any cutting for a commission work next year.
Now I look like a homeless or a surviving soldier of the Samurai.
I admit I looked suspicious today.

目が覚めたのは、11時ごろ。
一昨日の晩よく眠れなかったせいで疲れ果てていたに違いない。
今日ベルファストに戻る前に昨日と同じ国境地点に戻ってキャンプするつもりだったが、キャンピングカー置き場が6時にしまってしまうことに気づいた。
予定を変更し、ベルファストに向かう前に、スポンサーのシテイ・オブ・カルチャー(文化都市)の事務所によって、スタッフにキャンピングカー見せてから帰ろうと思った。
到着後、セキュリティに、自分がシテイ・オブ・カルチャーがスポンサーになっているアーティストでスタッフに作品のキャンピングカーを見せるために来たんだと言っても中々信じてもらえず、彼らは北アイルランドで昨今起こっている爆弾テロの問題を話し始めた。

その後なんとか中に入ることができ、シテイ・オブ・カルチャーのプログラム・コーディネーターにキャンピングカーを見せると、彼女はいい感じで予想通りの反応で感嘆していた。

シテイ・オブ・カルチャーを去った後、自分がどんな風貌だったか考え始めた。
ヒッピーのように、キャンピングカーをひいていて、来年のコミッションワークのために髪の毛を全く切らずにのばしているせいで、浮浪者か落ち武者のような風貌だったのである。
自分で考えてみても怪しい見た目だったことは否めない。

2nd day of camping on the border between Ireland & Northern Ireland / アイルランドと北アイルランド(英国)の国境でのキャンプ2日目

Though the trouble last night let me down,
I tried to be positive to camp on the border since I woke up with the noise of cars.

After I opened my caravan,
I got 1st customer today really soon.

Most of customers ask me "Are you selling this caravan?"
And then I eventually get the opportunity to communicate with them.

Everybody even my neighbors, not even art friends, if once they enter inside the caravan,
They are always really surprised inside the caravan.
And they they start communicating with me.

My challenge here is how to invite people inside in not protected venue by art audience but this contact of public road.
I have been doing so many projects which involve people in public space since I became an artist.

As I have nearly finished installation and fixing the problems of caravan,
I should start thinking how to invite people into my project in public space
By remembering the time when I have started exposing my objects in public space around 17 years ago.


昨日の事件は凹むけど、
車の騒音で目が覚めてから、ポジティブにいこうと思った。

キャンピングカーを開けてから、すぐに今日最初の来客があった。
ほとんどの来客のきっかけが、このキャンピングカー売っているのかい？と聞かれる
それで、コミュニケーションがはじまるのである。

このプロジェクトに関しては、近所の人や、アート関係に限らない友人なども、全ての人がキャンピングカーの中に一旦入いると、驚愕する。そうなればしめたもので、コミュニケーションがはじまるのである。

ここでのチャレンジはアートに守られた展示会場とは違う、公共空間のコンテクストで、
どうやって、人々を自分のキャンピングカーに誘い込むかということである。

アート活動を始めてから、人々を巻き込む多くのプロジェクトをやってきた。

インスタレーションやキャンピングカーの補修が終わりに近づく今、17年前の自分の昔の活動をふりかえり初心に返って、公共空間でどうやって人々をプロジェクトに巻き込むか考え直すことが必要になっている。




At first I tried to put the sign beside the entrance.
And most of people don't read the sign and then they ask me whether I am selling the caravan or not.

最初は入り口の前に看板を置いた。
すると、ほとんどの人は看板を見ずに、キャンピングカーを売っているのか聞いてくる。

I have not got any more customer today and then I moved to the camping park on the border before it's getting dark.

わかったことは、ドライバーに見えるように置くと客が更に減ってしまうことに気づいた。

更に客は来なかったので、暗くなる前にキャンピングパークに移動した。

I found "The secure plate fastener" specially for caravan doesn't work if I stuck plates too much.

購入したキャンピングカー専用の皿の固定ユニットも枚数が多いと役立たないことに気づいた。
